Founded in 2015, Purple is an American comfort technology brand based in Utah. The company specializes in the direct-to-consumer sales of no-pressure, premium quality mattresses and accessories including seat cushions, back cushions, pillows and platform bases. The founders, Tony and Terry Pearce, have had extensive experience in patents involving cushioning materials, fluids and hyper-elastic polymers. One such machine was created to fuse large chunks of elastic polymers into mattresses in 2013.
Thanks to the patented, scientifically-derived technology called Smart Comfort Grid and customizable firmness levels, Purple is suitable for all types of sleepers. There is also a fairly large selection of sizes available, making sure that close to all customers will be able to find a bed for themselves.
There are several differences between each of the three models of Purple mattresses, although all feature the famous purple gird that they are known for.T he patented Smart Comfort Grid layer has undergone many tweaks during the past thirty years to create and perfect the first, no pressure points mattress for all types of sleepers. The layer is scientifically engineered to flex under pressure points like shoulders and hips and reduce pain to none. At the same time, the layer gently supports the rest of the body. Furthermore, the unique design allows to promote airflow and keep the heat away from the bed through the whole night. Finally, Smart Comfort Grid reduces motion transfer to zero, making Purple an excellent choice for couples.
Original Purple Mattress
The original purple mattress features 2 inches of No Pressure Purple Grid atop a dual layer of CertiPUR-US certified comfort foam. This is their most budget-friendly model, yet is still supportive and comfortable.
Purple Hybrid Mattress
The Purple Hybrid Mattress also includes the classic 2 inches of No Pressure Purple Grid. As a hybrid, it also includes responsive support coils in the form of 7.5-inch pocket springs. The foam layer is a 1-inch layer of 2 lb density polyurethane foam. Because of the addition of coils in this mattress, it has better airflow than the original Purple mattress.
Purple Hybrid Premier Mattress
The Purple Hybrid Premier Mattress gives you the choice of either 3 inches or 4 inches of No Pressure Purple Grid. You’ll also enjoy responsive 7.5″ support coils along with 1″ of 2 lb density polyurethane foam.
The StretchMax cover is designed to enhance the benefits of Smart Comfort Grid by providing just the right amount of tautness while remaining lose and comfortable. Being highly breathable and stretchy, the cover sits directly on top of the Smart Comfort Grid and allows sleepers to fully experience the comfort of the product.
Firmness, Feel & Support
Overall, Purple is extremely comfortable thanks to its unique scientific technology design. Lying down on the mattress feels a little odd in the beginning, mainly due to the design. It’s nothing like memory foam or spring mattresses. As you lie down, Purple instantly mimics your body’s natural shape and cradles it, while providing enough support for your back.
Given the customizable levels of thickness (2”, 3”, 4”) of the Smart Comfort Grid layer, the product is suitable for all types of sleepers including couples and customers with neck, back and shoulder pains. While the Hybrid feels a little firmer than the original Purple, the Hybrid Premier feels both supportive as well as plush, since the grid in this model is thicker than both the original and hybrid. Finally, motion transfer is virtually none existent thanks to motion isolation around the sleepers.

Overall, Purple is an excellent choice in the luxurious, handcrafted mattresses category, featuring a unique scientifically-derived technology design. The exceptional combination of maximum pressure point relief paired with back support, the exact adaptation to the sleepers’ body shape while isolating motion and maintaining airflow makes Purple a worthy choice for all types of sleepers, including couples. Furthermore, the brand offers free shipping and returns, in-home installation, and old mattress removal, which can be very handy for many customers. Finally, customers have the chance to try the mattress in-store in their state, which is extremely rare.
On the downside, the mattress is fairly expensive and offers a shorter free trial and warranty, compared to many other luxury mattress manufacturers. For such a high price mark, the warranty and free trial period should have been at least doubled. Nonetheless, if you’re looking for a new hypoallergenic luxury mattress, Purple is definitely worth a try.
