About the brand
Founded in 2015 by a father-daughter team in Cleveland, Ohio, this brand was created with a clear mission: to design mattresses that truly support people with bigger bodies. Being a very tall, full-figured woman, I can relate to this. Their flagship hybrid mattress combines high-density foams with strong innerspring coils—and you can feel the difference. What really stood out to me is that the family behind Big Fig has over 90 years of mattress manufacturing experience. Tha...t’s not something you come across every day! I love how they’ve put all that expertise into a product that feels thoughtful, durable, and genuinely comfortable. It’s clear they care about their customers, which shows in the quality and attention to detail. For anyone struggling to find a strong and cozy mattress, this might just be it! Read more

In-depth review

Firmness Level
When it comes to firmness, Big Fig mattresses have all levels covered! Their Luxe mattress offers a firmness level of 5.5-7/10 if you prefer a softer mattress when sleeping. For in-between firmness, you’re going to want to choose their Classic mattress, which offers a firmness level of 7-8.5/10.
You may desire a very firm mattress, and that’s where the Firm mattress comes in at a firmness level of 9-10/10. Personally, I like somewhere in-between and would go for the Classic mattress as someone with a medium-full figure body type.
Cooling Properties
The cooling features really stand out—especially if you tend to sleep hot or just prefer a cooler sleep environment. The top cover is treated with ThermoGel, which activates when it comes into contact with moisture. Basically, it helps pull heat away from your body so you’re not waking up in a sweat. The fabric is also breathable and moisture-wicking, which keeps things feeling fresh right from the first moment you lie down.
Beneath the surface is a layer of gel-infused, perforated foam meant to improve airflow and prevent heat from getting trapped. The gel helps with cooling, while the perforations let warm air escape instead of getting stuck around you.
What I also like about the design is that it doesn’t rely just on foam—there’s a mix of high-density foam and individually wrapped coils. That combo not only adds support but also helps with air circulation. Unlike traditional memory foam that hugs you too tightly and locks in heat, this setup seems to strike a good balance between comfort and breathability.
Pressure Relief
When it comes to pressure relief, Big Fig has designed their mattress to cater specifically to people like me who need extra support without sacrificing comfort. Instead of going with super-soft memory foam that might just sink too much under pressure, Big Fig uses high-density foams. This gives a slightly responsive, contouring feel that still holds you up—especially around the shoulders, hips, and lower back, where you usually feel the most pressure.
Another fantastic feature is the individually wrapped coils underneath the foam layers. They respond independently, which means the mattress adapts to your body shape and weight in real time. You will feel supported where you need it most and won’t wake up sore or misaligned. The way it balances support naturally gives extra reinforcement to your lower back without making the mattress feel uneven.
Another feature is the ThermoGel cooling technology on the surface. It keeps you cool throughout the night and adds to your overall comfort.
Responsiveness
Big Fig Mattresses offer impressive responsiveness, especially for a mattress built with heavier sleepers in mind. Its hybrid construction is a key part of this, combining individually wrapped coils with a foam top layer—both known for their ability to react quickly to movement and pressure.
Underneath, the coil system adds another level of responsiveness. Each coil is wrapped individually so the mattress can adapt to localized pressure rather than moving as a single unit. This means it adjusts quickly to changes in sleep position and offers consistent support, no matter where you lie or how often you move.
Big Fig uses high-resilience, high-density materials throughout its construction, which enhances durability and responsiveness. This design makes the mattress a solid option for those who need a bed that keeps up with movement without sacrificing support or stability.
Motion Isolation
Motion isolation becomes a pretty big deal if you’re sharing a bed—especially with someone who tosses, turns, or gets up at all hours. The Big Fig mattress handles this really well, and here’s why:
First, it uses individually wrapped coils, a huge advantage over older-style spring mattresses. Because each coil moves independently, motion doesn’t travel across the bed the same way it would with connected springs. That means if your partner shifts or rolls over, you’re way less likely to feel it on your side.
Then there’s the foam layering—high-density foam stacked in a way that really helps absorb and dull any movement. The way Big Fig has built the mattress seems to strike a great balance between support and motion control. You won’t feel like you’re sinking in too much, but you also won’t be bouncing up and down every time someone moves.
So, if motion transfer is one of your worries—whether you’re a light sleeper or just want to avoid the midnight “jiggle effect”—I honestly think Big Fig mattresses are worth considering. For a hybrid with strong support, it does a great job keeping things calm and quiet on both sides of the bed.
Edge Support
Edge support is a super important feature when choosing the correct mattress, especially for a full-figured person who needs extra support. Big Fig mattresses have foam support at the edges, which adds extra comfort.
They have support foam at their edges, which increases the sleep surface by up to 20%. That’s important if you are plus-sized and tend to toss and turn at night. It prevents sagging around the entire bed, which means you will wake up feeling refreshed.
Big Fig mattresses have a hybrid construction, individually wrapped coil springs, a high-density foam edge, and hand tufting, which creates secure edges. This guarantees not only comfortable sleeping but also sitting on the edges, knowing your body will be held firm and secure.
Construction
Big Fig mattresses stand out because of their thoughtful and sturdy construction. They’re specifically engineered for full-figured or plus-size sleepers and consist of five layers, each playing an important role in how the mattress performs in terms of support, durability, and comfort.
- Gel-Infused Foam (Top Layer)
- High-Density Comfort Foam (Second Layer)
- Transition Foam (Third Layer)
- Individually-Wrapped Coil System (Support Layer)
- High-Density Edge Support Foam
Overall, the Big Fig’s construction is all about durability, temperature regulation, and tailored support for heavier body types. The layering is firm and resilient without sacrificing comfort, and the hybrid design strikes a balance between foam softness and coil strength. It’s clear this mattress was purpose-built to last—and to perform well under pressure.
Mattress cover
The cover of the Big Fig Mattress is made from a thermo-sensitive fabric blend, designed specifically to help regulate temperature and promote breathability. While the exact material composition isn’t disclosed in full detail, it’s often described as a polyester blend infused with ThermoGel cooling technology, which activates on contact with body heat to create a cooler sleep surface.
In terms of feel, the cover is described as smooth and soft to the touch, with a slightly cool sensation. It’s breathable and helps wick away moisture, which is especially helpful for hot sleepers or those who live in warmer climates.
One standout design feature is the tufted top, which includes 16 tufts sewn directly into the mattress. This not only gives the Big Fig a more premium, finished look but also helps keep the internal layers in place, reducing the risk of shifting or lumpiness over time. The tufting adds a subtle layer of cushioning to the surface, enhancing overall comfort without making the mattress feel too plush.
Practicality-wise, the cover is not removable or machine washable, which is typical for hybrid mattresses with tufted tops. Spot cleaning is recommended for spills or stains. For long-term protection and easier maintenance, most users opt to use a separate waterproof or breathable mattress protector, which Big Fig sells for $129.
Overall, the Big Fig cover blends cooling functionality with thoughtful design, adding to the mattress’s comfort and durability while giving it a clean, tailored look.
