Sizes & Pricing

Avocado offers two hybrid mattresses: the Avocado Green and the Avocado Vegan. These 11” tall mattresses are available in six different sizes – Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, Cal King. The main difference between green and vegan types is that vegan mattresses do not contain wool in any part of the mattress.

The addition of a 2” pillow-top for these two mattresses is nice, but it also costs a lot –$300 to $600, depending on the size of the mattress – so if you’re really keen on having a plusher mattress, expect to pay around $2,000 in total.

As for Avocado’s new latex mattress, it is a 9-inch thick mattress that is also available in 6 sizes. The prices range from $1,199 for a twin size mattress to $2,399 for a king or California king size mattress. Unlike Avocado’s green and vegan mattresses, there is no option to add on a pillowtop for an extra price when it comes to the latex mattress.

Keep in mind that the prices reflected in the price boxes below do not include the optional pillow top, which costs an extra $300 to $600 if desired.

Overview

Founded in 2015, Avocado is a US-based luxury, GOTS- and GOLS-certified organic mattress producer that has been featured in numerous magazines and consistently made top 5-10 lists of the best organic mattresses available today.  They produce two hybrid mattresses (one of which is vegan) as well as a non-hybrid latex mattress. Their mattresses are suitable for nearly all types of sleepers, including side sleepers and people with back-pain issues, thanks to the additional option of a pillow-top that adjusts the firmness of the vegan and green mattresses.

Construction

Green and Vegan Mattresses:

Avocado’s green and vegan mattresses have similar designs, with the exception being that the vegan mattress does not contain wool. Here is what you can expect in your green or vegan mattress:

Top Layer: GOTS-certified organic cotton ticking which covers the entire the mattress. In the green mattress, you’ll find this followed by a layer of GOTS-certified organic wool. In the vegan version, the wool is replaced with more organic cotton instead.

Dunlop Latex Layer: The Dunlop latex layer is consists of 2 inches of GOLS-organic certified latex that adapts to your body and provides comfortable support. It also has cooling properties.

Coil Layer: This layer is comprised of up to 1414 individually-tuned support coils, which help achieve pressure relief. The coils themselves are made from recycled steel and are grouped in three areas of the mattress including the perimeters, distributing your weight evenly. They are individually wrapped, which helps to decrease motion transfer. Furthermore, they provide substantial edge support thanks to doubly-reinforced perimeters.

Base Layer: The base layer is made up of 1-inch of GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex.

Optional Plush Pillow Top: The plush pillow top layer adds 2 more inches to your mattress. It’s made of a traditional European pillow top that’s been filled with latex rubber foam.

Latex Mattress:

Avocado’s latex mattress, unlike the green and hybrid versions, is not a hybrid mattress. Therefore, it does not include a layer of coils.

Top Layer: A panel of GOTS-certified organic cotton and wool is followed by 2 inches of GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex that contours to your body. Lasers are used to cut out triangular peaks in a zig-zag pattern, on the bottom of the top latex layer facing the support layer. The result is three zones that reduce pressure on areas such as your shoulders and hips.

Support Layer: 3 inches of GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex with a layer of GOTS-certified organic cotton. This addition of cotton keeps the mattress from being overly bouncy.

Base Layer: Finally, the base layer is made up of another 4 inches of certified organic Dunlop latex that is durable and resilient.

Avocado mattresses feature natural and organic materials, such as:

  • GOLS-certified Dunlop latex rubber is the best of its kind and features high durability and resilience
  • Joma New Zealand wool acts as a fire barrier while keeping moisture, microbes and dust mites away, and further supports temperature control.
  • 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton gives the mattress a soft, premium feel and is highly breathable.

Mattress Cover

The cover is made of tufted organic cotton with a layer of Joma New Zealand wool underneath. The high-quality cotton provides softness and breathability while the additional layer of wool helps protect the mattress against dust mites and moisture and allows for greater temperature control.

The cover isn’t removable. Generally, organic materials shouldn’t be washed with a washing machine since that will make them lose durability and protection features. On the bright side, there are a few ways of cleaning the cover without using any harsh chemicals right inside your room. The brand features an article on its website that explains everything in detail.

Firmness, Feel & Support

The green and vegan mattresses are medium-firm, scoring a 7 on a firmness scale of 1 to 10, which is considered comfortable for the majority of sleepers. To help adjust the firmness and achieve more softness, you’ll need to purchase the additional pillow-top, which has a firmness level of 5.5. Lying down on the mattress gives you an extreme sense of softness, which can only be achieved with the help of premium quality materials.

As for the latex version of the Avocado mattress, it is certainly firmer than the green or vegan options. We would consider it at least a 7.5 on the firmness scale, and as we said previously, it doesn’t come with the option of a pillow top. If you want a softer feel, however, you can always purchase a mattress topper from Avocado.

In the green and vegan mattresses, the high number of support coils that are placed neatly around the perimeter of the mattress, as well as grouped in three different zones, help perfect the distribution of the sleepers’ weight on the mattress, providing maximum balance and spine alignment. Also, thanks to the strengthened perimeter, the mattress has great edge support, reducing the “rolling-off” feeling during sleep.

However, being an organic, hybrid mattress, Avocado cannot offer motion isolation on par with memory foam mattresses, which can be a problem for some couples if one is a restless sleeper. The all latex model would be the better choice for those couples.

Overall, the green and vegan mattresses are suitable for all sleeping positions and can support pretty much any sleepers in terms of weight and deliver above-average to great satisfaction. As for the latex mattress, this would be a better choice for back or stomach sleepers — not side sleepers. The Avocado latex mattress is also a great choice for heavier bodies due to its firmness level and durability, as you won’t feel as much sinkage with this mattress.

Purchase & Delivery Process

All the operations are done online including choosing the type, size, and any additional items for the mattress. Customers can sign up for a free 100-nights trial before deciding to commit to the purchase. Both shipping and returns are free of charge. However, in-house installation as well as taking away your old mattress comes at the price of $199. Also, the mattresses are fairly heavy, which may be an issue while installing it, even with the help of your spouse.

Pillow Offerings

The Avocado Green Pillow is the cheaper option available through this brand, although only just. It is filled with organic latex and kapok and can be customized to suit different sleep styles. The Avocado Green Pillow features a machine washable cotton liner and a luxury finish. It is 100% vegan, available in three sizes, and is handmade in the United States.

Avocado also offers the Molded Latex Pillow, which is better suited to sleepers who prefer a firmer and more supportive pillow. It holds its shape throughout the night, stays cool and dry, and has a removable, washable, organic cotton cover. These easy-to-clean, supportive, cooling pillows offer affordable luxury and make for a great addition to an Avocado mattress. They are also covered by a 100 Night Sleep Trial and a warranty that lasts for a full year.

Mattress Toppers

Avocado has three mattress toppers for you to choose from. All are made from the finest natural materials and are available for all mattresses, regardless of size and manufacturer. The lowest-cost option is the Green Organic Latex Topper, which uses a blend of certified organic wool, cotton, and latex in combination with reinforced seams for optimal support.

The most expensive option is made from fine alpaca wool and cotton—a  soft, plush, and ultra-luxury experience. In the middle, you’ll find the Avocado Vegan Mattress Topper, which is similar to the Green Organic Topper but uses cotton instead of wool.

These handmade toppers come with a 10-year warranty and financing options are available. Prices range from $349 to $799 depending on the size and which type you choose.

Customer support

Avocado has a variety of ways to get in touch with their customer support, including live chat (Monday – Sunday, 10 am – 11 pm), Zoom (for video demos for sales ), and an email ticketing service on their website. They also have an FAQ section on their site.

Unfortunately, they do note that during times of high volume, it could take 8-10 business days to get back to you via email or phone. They don’t advertise a phone number on their site but you can leave your phone number on the email ticketing form if you want them to call you. If you want to talk to them urgently, however, your best bet is probably via live chat.

One plus is that the company has a robust discount program for teachers, military personnel, law enforcement officers, firefighters, and nurses.

  • Phone Support
There is an option to request a call back by dropping a message to the brand representatives and scheduling a time to talk.
  • Live Online Chat

  • Video Tutorials
There are a number of product reviews on YouTube done by previous and current owners.
  • FAQ
There is a well-organized FAQ section, but it doesn’t offer in-depth answers to the questions provided.

Final Word

Overall, the Avocado mattresses are a good choice when shopping for premium quality mattresses, especially if certifications are important to you.

The high quality of materials, the number of positive reviews from previous owners (over 5,000) as well as numerous certifications can, in most cases, be enough to negate any potential inconveniences such as the heavy weight of the mattress. In terms of build and quality, Avocado mattress is second to none and you should at least give it a try if you’re serious about purchasing luxurious products.
